Today I would like to inform you about what will happen to the Re-entry permit<\/span> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

while waiting for permanent residency visa that is being applied for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Permanent residency visa that is in application process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What will happen to visa during in process of permanent residency?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I used to hold Non-Immigrant B (commonly known as a business visa) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

until I\u2019ve applied for Thai permanent residency rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

This visa is a visa for obtaining a work permit, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

and normally when you are a foreigner and want to work in Thailand, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

you need to obtain this Non-Immigrant B (commonly known as a business visa).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am not going to explain the types of visas in detail today, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

but Thailand separates visas, which is a stay permits, and work permits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the visa is only a stay permit, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

you cannot work just by obtaining a Non-Immigrant B (commonly known as a Business visa).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since I am a foreigner (Japanese national) working in Thailand, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have been holding Non-Immigrant B (commonly known as a business visa) for many years, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

but this visa was canceled at the same time as I applied for permanent residence <\/p>\n\n\n\n

and stamped as below was stamped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I\u2019ve applied for permanent residency in December 2011, it is stamped “December 26, 2011”. You can see from the stamp that I\u2019ve applied for permanent residency and is under review.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

The visa category \u201cNon-Immigrant B\u201d is no longer there and it says that now being <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201capplied for permanent residency and is under review\u201d<\/span>, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

and the status of stay in Thailand will also be treated as \u201cunder review\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are various categories of visa, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

but you will need a Re-entry permit<\/span> when leaving Thailand in any category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without this re-entry permit, a valid visa will expire if you leave Thailand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, you will have to apply again from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This applies even when you are applying for permanent residence, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

so if you are planning to leave Thailand, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

you will need to obtain a Re-entry permit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the above photos, the stamp on the top is a stamp under review for permanent residency, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

and basically it will be updated every six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every six months, you will have to visit the immigration office to \u201ccame to show my face\u201d visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the half year, I had plans to go abroad, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

so I have obtained Re-entry permit (stamp below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you see the handwritten “J02-4\/54” in the upper right corner of the photo?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It means “the 2nd<\/sup> applicant out of 4 Japanese nationals (J) in B.E. 2554.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you subtract 543 from the Buddhist calendar year, you will get the Western calendar year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then you will know that I\u2019ve applied for permanent residency in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After applying for permanent residence, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

the stamp of “under review” will continue to be stamped until the permission is granted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I applied in December 2011 and was granted with permanent residency in July 2015, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

so I have 7 stamps in my passport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What about visa renewal process?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Visa applications and renewals for Bangkok residents <\/p>\n\n\n\n

will be done at the Immigration Office located in the Government Complex <\/p>\n\n\n\n

on Chaeng Watthana Road, Laksi district in northern Bangkok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visa applications and renewals are handled at different points of contact depending on the category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
