Hello, everyone I am Chifumi Maeda,
a Japanese female president living in Bangkok.
Thank you, guys, for visiting this
“True comments from Japanese female presidents living in Thailand” blog
Today, I would like to introduce my favorite Japanese restaurant, Sasaya.
There are many Japanese restaurants in Bangkok,
but this Sasaya offers creative cuisine
that is a little different from other restaurants.
There are two branches in Bangkok; Silom (Narathiwas Soi 1 and Silom Soi 6)
and Sukhumvit Phrom Phong area (Soi Phrom Si 1: between Sukhumvit 39 and 49)
and because of its deliciousness and good service,
the restaurants are loved not only by the Japanese living in Thailand but also by the locals.

Inside Sasaya: A Visual Tour of the Restaurant’s Interior
Sasaya has large and small private rooms in a mud-walled restaurant
that evokes old Japanese rural houses.
The lighting inside the restaurant is a little dark,
creating a calm atmosphere.
I often visit the Silom branch as it is near my house.
The Silom branch has 1st to 4th floors,
with table seats and private rooms on the 1st floor,
and private rooms on the 2nd to 4th floor.
The Sukhumvit branch is designed basically the same.
The restaurant is suitable for every occasion
such as important entertainment and dinner with friends and family,
and I myself use the restaurant for both business and private.
Everybody will be very happy when you take them to Sasaya.
In Japan, the number of old private houses are decreasing,
and there are not many opportunities to see shops built like this.
Being able to experience the feeling of being
in the countryside of Japan in Bangkok is truly priceless.
Of course, most importantly,
the meal is also delicious, so it is very helpful place.

Sasaya’s Signature Dishes: Fresh Ingredients & Unique Japanese Creations
Using fresh fish and vegetables delivered directly from Japan 5 times a week,
the restaurant is particular about the soup stock they prepare.
Sasaya also has a wide selection of sake
that goes well with meals, and one of Sasaya’s charms is that
you can enjoy sake from various regions with delicious food.
Sasaya’s menu features fresh ingredients and unique creations.
There are quite a lot of items on the menu,
and as someone like me who cooks,
you would just like me, wonder how they prepare the dishes.
I’ve posted here few examples of their menu, you will get the impression that they have everything.
In addition to arranging course meals,
there are also appetizers, steamed foods, fried foods,
sashimi, meals, desserts, and more.
And there are pictures of all dishes,
so that even for those who have never had Japanese food can easily imagine it.
And since Japanese cuisine does not have so many spicy foods,
even those who do not like spicy food can enjoy the foods here without any worries.
Many of the dishes are not cutting corners, and beautiful to look at.
Each dish is prepared one by one,
while reproducing the traditional taste of Japan,
it also adds a unique arrangements.
Now, I would like to talk about some of the menus that I personally recommend.
Top Menu Items to Try at Sasaya, Bangkok
I eat at Sasaya 4-5 times a month,
and I would like to introduce to you some of the dishes that I eat repeatedly.
First, what I always, and I mean always,
order Tai-Meshi (sea bream rice).
It takes 40 minutes to come to my table,
so I order before making any other orders first.
It is a luxurious dish using a whole sea bream
and is cooked with rice in an earthenware pot.
The flavor of the sea bream is condensed in the kombu broth.
There are about 4 servings,
so if I can’t finish it all, I will take home and eat it again the next day.
Apart from the menu, you can’t miss the “Today’s Sashimi” directly sent directly from Japan.
In Japan, the fish that can be caught varies depending on the season,
and you can notice the seasons in Japan through the fish.
“Dashimaki tamago” is a simple dish made with dashi stock and eggs,
but it’s quite difficult to prepare when we want to try to.
It has a fluffy texture, and when you put it in your mouth,
the good aroma of the soup spreads.
The picture on the left is “Pickled whole Eggplant”
and the picture on the right is “Green Onion with Salted Octopus”.
The pickled eggplant has just the right amount of saltiness
and are not too sweet or too salty.
I think pickles are often eaten with rice,
but the salty taste is just right, so you can eat it like a salad.
The key to the “Salted Octopus” is the salt sauce of the green onions.
The umami of thinly sliced octopus
and the umami of green onions overlap in your mouth.
Don’t miss the fresh “Horse Mackerel Namero”.
If you like alcohol, this is the perfect accompaniment to Japanese sake.
When I visited the restaurant for lunch,
I had it with a heaping amount of white rice.
“Yam potato and green onion teppanyaki” has a fluffy texture like a pancake.
Sakura shrimp is inside, and the saltiness of the sakura shrimp is a nice accent.
“Minced Shrimp steamed in yuba wrap” is a carefully prepared dish
that wraps minced shrimp in yuba,
slowly steamed and then pour starchy sauce over it.
It is recommended that you order this dish for the number of people.
The broth has a mild flavor that melts in your mouth.
I don’t think there are many restaurants where you can have this.
“Potato pepperoncino” is thinly sliced potato stir-fry.
For some reason it goes well with rice.
Chinese dish also has stir-fried potatoes,
but it tastes a little different from that of Chinese food.
Because it is called pepperoncino, some may think it is spicy,
but it has a light spiciness that whets the appetite.
“Kaki Rishiri Kombu Hasamiyaki” is a dish that combines the umami of kelp with the umami of oysters.
It’s delicious with ponzu sauce but it’s delicious enough as it is.
Sasaya’s meals are of course delicious,
but their desserts are also pretty good.
I don’t like sweets, but Sasaya’s desserts are elegantly sweet,
and I often orders them at the end of meals.
Among desserts, I often order “Naruto Kintoki Kintsuba”.
“Kintsuba” is a traditional Japanese confectionery
made mainly of rice flour (or wheat flour), sugar, and water,
and is made by wrapping sweet bean paste in a thin skin.
Sasaya’s kintsuba is made with sweet potatoes
called “Naruto Kintoki” from Tokushima Prefecture,
and you can enjoy the rich flavor of sweet potatoes.
Another recommended dessert is “Wasanbon cream cake”.
Wasanbon is the name from one of the sugars
that is traditionally produced in Kagawa and Tokushima prefectures
and is often used in high-end Japanese sweets in Japan.
It has a mild sweetness and is pleasant to the palate.
And this cake is using the wasanbon.
The texture is fluffy and makes you in a happy mood.
There are more menus that I would like to introduce,
but I think you should find them out and enjoy them at the restaurant Sasaya.
What to Wear to Sasaya: Dress Code Guidelines
There are no dress codes.
Just come with clothe that you are comfortable in.
Cost of Dining at Sasaya: Budgeting for Your Meal
If you don’t drink alcohol and just came to enjoy their foods,
you can make yourselves full for about 1,000 baht per person.
When I come there with my husband,
a bottle of 300ml sake and a meal will cost around 4,000 baht.
They are also open for lunch, and you can eat for less than 500 baht for lunch.
